Ohio State Marching Band to perform script "Surf Ohio" salute to Beach Boys' 50th Anniversary at halftime of OSU vs. California game on September 15th
Acclaimed composer Brian Wilson to dot the 'i', might play keyboards
(Columbus, Ohio – April 1, 2012) On the banks of the mighty Olentangy River, mere yards from the legendary Ohio Stadium, officials from The Ohio State University and Surf Ohio LLC jointly announced on April 1st that the 2012 football season will feature the OSU Marching Band performing the inaugural, incomparable "Script 'Surf Ohio'" during the halftime show of the September 15th home game against California.
OSU Marching Band officials further revealed that the musical theme of its history-making halftime performance is a salute to the 50th anniversary of the Beach Boys, featuring selected music by award-winning composer and original Beach Boys musician, Brian Wilson, who will attend. Wilson will join an elite fraternity of non-band members such as Bob Hope, Woody Hayes and Les Wexner who have previously been honored with the invitation to "dot the 'i'" of the band's world-recognized Script "Ohio." Wilson, 69, will be the first to do so in this inaugural Script "Surf Ohio" formation.
Among those making the announcement was Surf Ohio founder and CEO, Ron Kaplan, who pointed out that his childhood family home overlooked the Olentangy River - just five miles north of the press conference site – and that it served to inspire his creation of the now infamous "Olentangy Masters Surfing Classic" t-shirt design in 1976. It was the same year Kaplan attended his first Beach Boys concert, coincidentally at St. John's Arena across the street from the stadium. After creating Surf Ohio for t-shirts while a student at Ohio University in 1978, Kaplan had the chance to meet the Beach Boys backstage and present them with Surf Ohio t-shirts in 1980, starting a tradition that continues to this day
